What companies are covering travel for Abortion?

June 29, 2022

How it started

Prior to 1973 in America, it was illegal to perform an abortion unless the mother's life was at stake. At the time a woman fictionally named  “Jane Roe” fought for the right to legally and safely end her pregnancy. Roe became the case that legalized abortion nationwide.

What's going on

Friday the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade. This resulted in many companies offering to cover travel for their employees that need an abortion. The companies offering services are Apple, Meta, Yelp, Uber, Disney, Netflix, JPMorgan and Chase, Nike, Starbucks, Alaska Airlines, Zillow, and Chobani to name a few.

Why it matters

Sadly legislators are a step ahead and are working on a number of abortion-related proposals that would stop companies from doing business in Texas if they pay for their residents of the state to receive an abortion elsewhere. Companies also face the risk of lawsuits as Republican states have voiced their thoughts on the matter. As time goes on we will know more about the repercussions of helping women have body autonomy.
